What Backpack Size is Ideal for an Overnight Backpacking Adventure?

Consider prioritizing your beginner backpacking gear collection with a reliable backpacking pack. I vividly remember my initial backpacking pack, which proved its worth for a remarkable 18 years. It accompanied me to 32 countries and gracefully covered more than 500 miles of trails.

With time, the padding began to show signs of wear, rendering the pack less comfortable. Nevertheless, it fulfilled various roles and remained a loyal companion throughout its lengthy tenure.

Once you’ve completed a few trips and you’re certain that this is something you’ll continue to pursue, invest in a backpack. It’s one of the more crucial backpacking essentials, so don’t be hesitant to spend when you decide to make the purchase.

Always ensure your backpack fits properly. This means going to a store and getting a proper fitting. They should measure your back, weigh the pack, and select the best pack size for you.

If possible, try on multiple packs for comparison. Attempt walking up and down stairs with a loaded pack. Then consider the following factors:

  • Capacity Check: Will it accommodate all your stuff? Regular backpacking packs usually start at around 45L. If you aren’t equipped with super lightweight gear or nifty compression sacks, it might be smart to lean towards a slightly roomier pack.
  • Ease of Access: Think about how easy it is to grab things on the move. Does the storage layout work for you? Can you stash items in convenient spots?
  • Comfort Matters: Any sore spots? How does the bag feel on your hips and shoulders? Can you turn your head without trouble?
  • Customization Options: Can you tweak the pack’s setup? Can you detach the brain (the top part)? Is there a rain cover included?
  • Adjustability is Key: Are the straps fully adaptable to accommodate extra layers, hefty loads, or longer days?

The Perfect Day Hiking Pack: 10-30L

This is a backpack. It can comfortably hold water, some snacks, perhaps a nice camera, an extra layer or two, and maybe even a water filter.

Large Capacity Lightweight Cycling Backpack

Squeezing backpacking gear into a day hiking bag might be challenging. Opt for something slightly larger and sturdier to tackle heavier loads with ease.

Backpack capacities start from 45L.

If you pack smartly and don’t have bulky beginner backpacking gear, a 45-liter backpack should suffice for all your needs. Make sure to secure all items hanging from the backpack to prevent them from wearing against your back.

If you’re skilled at packing efficiently and don’t have large items, a 45-liter backpack should accommodate everything, including key items hanging from the pack (always ensure they are secured to prevent discomfort during longer hikes).

I favor the 40-50L backpack range because they offer enough space for weekend warriors and are convenient for airplane travel (a plus if you also backpack during trips) while being less expensive than larger packs.
